This recipe is perfect for serving your pup at holiday parties and makes a great gift for other furry friends!
Ingredients:
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- ½ cup powdered milk
- 1 cup chicken broth (if store-bought make sure to check the ingredients to make sure there’s nothing dangerous in it for your pup)
- 2 large eggs (one for egg wash)
- 1 teaspoon peppermint oil
- red food coloring (optional, a little bit of food coloring that we use for human consumption is not dangerous to your pup)
Instructions:
- whisk all wet ingredients together until well combined
- add your dry ingredients, one at a time (stir well between each added ingredient)
- knead dough on floured surface
- divide dough in half
- make a well in one half and add the peppermint oil and food coloring
- work in food coloring until you get your desired color
- put both dough batches in a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour so the dough gets firm
- preheat oven to 350
- whisk an egg for egg wash
- when you remove the dough from refrigerator, break up dough batches into an equal number of pieces (depending on size of the treats you want to make)
- roll each piece of dough into a small snake-like shape
- twist one of each color together and bend at end to create a hook shape
- place “Candy Canes” on baking sheet and brush them with egg wash
- bake for 10-12 minutes (oven times may vary)
- cool completely and store in an airtight container
