Welcome Waldo

This weekend, Paws Give Me Purpose officially welcomed Waldo into our Sanctuary. Sanctuary can be defined as a place of peace, refuge or safety. A place where people/animals can live and be protected. This is what we do here at Paws Give Me Purpose; we treat every dog that comes through our doors with excellent care, compassion and love.

Waldo arrived very timid and unsure, and is currently taking time to relax, decompress, learning the daily routine and is slowly getting to know all the humans here caring for him. He is an extremely sweet boy! Poor Waldo has been through a very traumatic experience and we completely understand his very cautious attitude.

Waldo is estimated to be 8-9 years old and was found on the streets of Baltimore after having been hit by a car and severely injured. He was taken to the shelter where he went under emergency surgery to amputate his badly damaged leg; thanks to BARCS Franky Fund!

The shelter diligently searched for an owner, thinking Waldo had run away from someplace, but no one was to be found. No one even called or came looking for him – it is obvious he had a home based on the fact that he is completely housebroken, but it sadly seems was no longer wanted by those he thought would love him forever.

Once his stray hold was up, numerous rescue pleas had gone out but no one stepped up to take Waldo – that’s when we received a plea that literally had us in tears, and we could not say no. Waldo came to us when no one else stepped up to help him during his time of need and we will do our very best to help him heal his mind, body and soul.

In addition to being a “tripawd” now and requiring time to heal and adjust, Waldo has a severe road rash, will need to be neutered and have a dental. He will be seen by our Veterinary team this coming Thursday for a complete exam, full blood work, to check his surgical site to be sure he’s healing properly and find out when it will be time to remove his staples.

Waldo has a very good appetite and has already begun to enjoy the homemade food and goodies we serve here. He is currently taking an antibiotic and pain meds, clearly both needed at this time. He has been very uncomfortable and we don’t blame him one bit.

While we clearly have no idea what Waldo’s life was like prior to getting struck by a car, we do know he has been traumatized and we need your help to make things better for him!

Waldo deserves the chance to live his life to the fullest – he deserves this second chance to be happy, loved and cherished. We ask that you please consider making a donation to help us with Waldo’s care. If anyone is interested in becoming Waldo’s sponsor, please reach out to us directly.

Healing Prayers

Our oldest Sanctuary resident gave us quite a scare this morning, and we are still extremely worried.

Calvin came to Paws Give Me Purpose after having been rescued from life of criminal neglect. We brought him and his brother Hobbes to Sanctuary over a year ago and at the time we were aware that one of Calvin’s major health issues was a grade 5 heart murmur.

Until today, Calvin had been doing very well; his medical exams and echocardiograms indicated he did not require medications. He has been eating and taking his supplements like a champ, and enjoys every single day to the fullest being loved and spoiled as he should be.

Today, everything changed when Calvin awoke suddenly at 4am with a very bad coughing fit that he could not control or catch his breath from. Needless to say, we scrambled to get our Veterinarian to come out and see him on an emergency visit. The vet informed us that she heard a horrible crackling that was not there during last week’s physical exam and the horrid cough had her extremely concerned. She immediately sent us for X-rays.

Calvin was exhibiting sudden symptoms of heart failure. The X-rays confirmed that his heart was enlarged and is pressing on his trachea, causing a very horrific cough. Heart medications were immediately started (Lasix and Vetmedin), and Calvin will need to stay on these medications for the rest of his life.

Although he had just had an echocardiogram performed last month, the sudden onset of symptoms requires a new visit with the cardiologist for a new echocardiogram on April 20th.

In the meantime, we ask for all of our staff, volunteers, and supporters to please dig deep down in your hearts and send lots of healing prayers Calvin’s way and for those that are able their wallets. Donations are at an all time low and our medical funds are seriously drained. We can’t continue to do what we do without you!

At 22 years young Calvin still has a lot of life to live and we want to make sure he has everything his little heart desires. Our promise to Calvin is to provide a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life. This is what we do here at Paws Give Me Purpose Inc.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring Calvin’s lifetime care in Sanctuary, please reach out to us directly.

With you by our side, we can give special needs Waldo the chance to live out his golden years to the fullest – he deserves this second chance to be happy, loved and cherished.

We ask that you please consider making a donation to help us with his care.
